What to Do If Your Kids Don’t Like Getting Haircuts

Pure Excellence Hair Design Can Help Children Who Don’t Like Haircuts

If your kids don’t like getting haircuts, don’t worry. Pure Excellence Hair Design can help. Not only are we equipped at our salon to provide children assistance, this month’s blog topic offers a few tips. It’s very common for children, especially little ones, to dislike or even fear getting haircuts. First and foremost, we recommend not calling it a “haircut,” but a “trim” instead.

Why Call it a Trim, Not a Haircut?

Young children often associate the word “cut” with pain or damage. The word “cut” might make children fearful of haircuts. If you say they’re getting a “trim,” they might not be as scared. As children grow older, they’ll learn that neither haircuts nor trims are anything they need to fear.

In addition to using the word “trim” instead of “haircut,” you can also try:

  • Practicing haircuts at home before getting a professional one
  • Offering to let your children watch you or a trusted person get a haircut first
  • Giving them a distraction during their haircut, like a sweet treat or handheld video

Try to Practice Getting a Haircut at Home Before Going to the Salon

If you can’t acclimate your children to the salon before their haircut, you can ease into the experience at home. Set up a mini salon, and walk them through the process, just like they’ll go through at their appointment. You could try the haircut at home, if you feel confident, but at least mimic everything else about the event. At home, hopefully they’ll feel safe, and you’ll feel relaxed. After some practice at home, children might get excited about experiencing the real thing, making things easier at the salon.

Give Children a Distraction or Let Them Watch Another Person’s Haircut

Even if your children seem ready for a professional haircut, they might change their tune at the salon. In that case, we suggest giving them a distraction during the haircut. For younger children, the easiest distraction is their favorite toy. You might consider giving them dolls with hair that they can brush while getting their own haircut. In this day and age, offering a tablet or smartphone with videos or games also serves as an easy distraction. If distractions won’t work for your children, we recommend you let them watch another haircut first.

They’ll See Getting a Haircut Isn’t Scary When You Let Them Watch

Prior to your children’s haircut appointment, try to bring them to the salon to let them watch other haircuts. If you can’t do that, you could probably find videos of haircuts online to let them watch. As an added security, let them watch you or another trusted person get a haircut. As they do, the one they’re watching can assure them it’s nothing to fear.
