Home Remedies for Preventing Dry Hair This Winter

Pure Excellence Hair Design Can Help You Have Healthy Hair All Year

To finish 2022, we’re blogging about home remedies for preventing dry hair this winter. With nearly four whole months before spring, we’re all potentially victims of dry hair. The stylists at Pure Excellence Hair Design know that dry hair’s not only uncomfortable, but can cause hair to break. If going outside this winter, and exposing your hair to the cold is unavoidable, you can still prevent dry hair. Home remedies that prevent dry hair during the winter include:

  • Taking Fewer Showers, and Opting for Lukewarm Showers
  • Using Hot Oil
  • Choosing to Decrease Heat Styling Device Usage

Take Fewer Showers, and Keep Showers Lukewarm to Prevent Dry Hair

Our blog in November 2021 about dry hair explained how taking cold showers provides benefits for naturally dry hair. They constrict pores and cuticles, potentially locking in moisture. We heeded caution about this, however, because too much water can flatten hair, and strip it of volume. The best course of action is to take fewer showers, and, when taking them, opt for lukewarm showers.

How Fewer Showers and Lukewarm Showers Prevent Dry Hair

Taking fewer showers decreases how often you use shampoo that strips sebum from your hair. What’s sebum? It’s hair’s natural oil that makes it healthy, shiny, and easy to maintain. Fewer showers might mean washing hair every other day, or even weekly. Lukewarm showers help open up scalp pores, and enable shampoo to unclog follicles without overly hot water stripping sebum. Though cold showers also benefit dry hair, they trap moisture, ultimately making hair look flat; hence, lukewarm showers are better.

Prevent Dry Hair with More Hot Oil

Hot oil treatments moisturize and nourish dry hair by sealing hair cuticles. When you use hot oil to prevent dry hair, it also increases hair strength, and helps relieve dandruff. Popular home remedies for hot oil treatments include using olive, almond, jojoba, coconut, avocado, and argon oils. That all said, not every “hot” hair treatment prevents dry hair. As explained in our February 2022 blog, it’s best to air dry often, and decrease heat styling devices use.

How Opting to Decrease Heat Styling Device Use Prevents Dry Hair

Just like hot water strips hair of sebum, so does using heat styling devices. When you decrease heat styling device use, you stave off stripping sebum from hair. Furthermore, choosing to decrease heat styling device use keeps them from breaking down hair’s protein and hydrogen bonds.
