Opting to Do Daily Hair Washing Offers Both Disadvantages and Benefits
Our blog topic this month explains the pros and cons of washing your hair daily. Hair washing regularly is good hygiene practice. It also leads to developing overall healthy hair. How often someone does regular hair washing depends greatly on culture, hair texture, their scalp, and styling habits. That said, Pure Excellence Hair Design wants to ensure you understand the various advantages and disadvantages of daily hair washing. Washing your hair every day acts like skin care, removes dandruff, causes split ends, and removes natural oils.
Pros of Daily Hair Washing
It’s Similar to Skin Care and Removes Dandruff
One pro of daily hair washing is that it acts like skin care. Under that hair you’re washing is a scalp covered in skin. Daily hair washing is like skin care because it removes excess sweat and oil from your scalp’s skin. Shampoo with water also removes dirt, debris, and odors from the scalp, like skincare, does on the body. Another pro of daily hair washing is that it removes dandruff.
Why it’s a Pro that Daily Hair Washing Removes Dandruff
According to the Mayo Clinic, dandruff is a form of seborrheic (increased secretion and discharge of sebum) dermatitis (inflamed dermis.) Simply put, dandruff is a buildup of extra sebum that causes the scalp’s dermis—skin—to flake. This often results in feeling itchy, burning sensations on your head. Daily hair washing relieves these symptoms because it removes dandruff.
Daily Hair Washing Cons
Hair Washing Removes Natural Oils and Causes Split Ends
While it’s advantageous that daily hair washing removes dandruff and acts like skin care, hair washing every day has its disadvantages. One con, or disadvantage, of daily hair washing, is that it can result in split ends. If the ends of your hair become dry, brittle, and frayed, you have split ends. Consistently having split ends can lead to more damage to hair’s shaft and its strands. Besides causing split ends, another disadvantage of daily hair washing is that doing so removes natural oils in the hair.
Why it’s a Con that Daily Hair Washing Removes Natural Oils in the hair
In our November 2021 blog, we explained that sebum is a natural oil in hair. When you wash your hair every day, it strips it of sebum – removes natural oils – and results in dry hair. Therefore, it’s a con or a disadvantage that daily hair washing removes natural oils in the hair.
