This month, we’re blogging about the top five hair trends for 2022. Everybody is entitled to a unique and individual style. This includes hair. While it’s still early in the year, we’ve seen these hair styles trend a lot in 2022

  • Waves, layers, and curls on short hair
  • Wavy pixies with an undercut
  • Mid-length curly shag
  • Wolf cuts on long hair
  • Blunt cuts with highlights

Trend #1: Try Some Waves, Layers, and Curls on Short Hair

Many hairstyles trending in 2022 include waves, layers, and curls on short hair, like on Julia Garner and Charlize Theron. Adding waves, layers, and curls on short hair can create volume, texture, and style. If you don’t have natural waves, layers, and curls, Pure Excellence Hair Design can help get this style started. After you leave our salon with waves, layers, and curls on short hair, you can achieve at-home waves and curls.

At-Home Curls

To create your own curls quickly and easily, use a curling iron. While it’s more common to use this device on medium-length and longer hair, it’s not impossible on short hair. After you apply a heat protectant to your hair, set the iron to 400 degrees for uncolored hair and 350 degrees for colored or heat-sensitive hair. Wrap a section of hair in the curling iron clamp one to two times away from your face. Continue curling each section and alternate the direction that you curl. Finish by applying hairspray to ensure the curls stay in place. Using pin curls and Velcro rollers also create at-home curls without using heat.

At-Home Waves

One way to achieve at-home waves is using a flat iron. Fully ceramic or titanium plate flat irons create the most heat. Just as we suggested with using a curling iron, start out by applying heat protectant. Take one-inch sections in the iron and hold each out horizontally. As you move the iron down, turn your wrist back and forth. Move the iron away, then back. You could also curl your hair first with a curling iron. then comb out the curls to loosen them into waves. To create waves without heat, try braiding your hair or twisting it, letting it air dry, then undoing the style. Twist styles that work the best include bantu knots and buns.

Trend #2: Wavy Pixie Style with an Undercut

Celebrities like Cardi B. and Demi Lavato have contributed to the wavy pixie style with an undercut trending in 2022. Basically, this style fuses two versatile haircuts together. A pixie hair style comes with cropping in layers, to create a somewhat tousled effect. To achieve a wavy pixie style with an undercut, first, you need a short haircut on wavy hair. If you don’t have naturally wavy hair, the Pure Excellence hairstylists can create waves for you, or you can at-home. Once your waves get styled into the short, pixie cut, the sides or back of your hair get shaved. After shaving, the hair gets disconnected from the short hair on top, creating the wavy pixie style with an undercut.

Trend #3: Mid-Length Curly Shag

Sandra Oh, Taylor Swift, and other celebs, have made the mid-length curly shag a hit in 2022. To get a mid-length curly shag, have your hairstylist do a straight-across the bottom cut. Textured layers will also need created higher up, above the bottom cut. This creates a noticeable contrast between the wisps at the top, sides, and back and the straight cut ends. If you have a warm, chestnut hair color, a mid-length curly shag will look especially stunning. This style also works well with a wavy or curly hair texture. We don’t recommend a mid-length curly shag for thin hair; the layers will take out too much weight.

Trend #4: Wolf Cut on Long Hair

Nowadays, celebrities like Billie Eilish and Miley Cyrus made the wolf cut on long hair Gen Z’s mullet. A mullet is a hairstyle that’s short on the sides and top, but longer in the back. This haircut became popular in the 1980s. The wolf cut on long hair combines the 40-year-old mullet with a next-generation shag. How the wolf cut differs from the mullet is its choppy layers. The shorter layers go on top and longer layers go along the sides and back.

Trend #5: Blunt Cut with Highlights

The simplest trendy hairstyle for 2022 is a blunt cut with highlights, as seen on Jennifer Aniston and Selena Gomez. A blunt cut with highlights simply means the hair’s cut without layers and includes both a base and second color. If you have naturally straight and fine hair, or a fuller bodied, textured hair type, this style looks great. When deciding on what highlight to get, we recommend a color two shades lighter than the base. We also suggest you match your undertones—mix cool with cool and warm with warm. A blunt cut with highlights looks especially good on blonde and brunette hair, as those spectrums have many shade variations. Redheads or those with black hair who get a blunt cut with highlights will look good too!
