Pros and Cons of Shampoo, Conditioner, and Natural Oils

We Know How to Maintain Healthy Hair at Pure Excellence Hair Design

This month, we’re blogging about the pros and cons of shampoo, conditioner, and natural oils. When it comes to cleaning hair, shampoo’s the obvious choice, right? After all, shampoo’s a hair care product that cleans the scalp’s skin, along with the hairs attached to it. Conditioners soften hair, and make it easier to manage. Pure Excellence Hair Design knows that having healthy hair is a thing of beauty. But do shampoos, conditioners, and natural oils create healthy hair?

Shampoo & Conditioner Pros & Cons: Cleaning’s Good, Sulfates are Bad

Healthy hair care uses both shampoo and conditioner to prevent excessively dry or oily hair by cleaning and softening it. Though beauty is in the eye of the beholder, most people feel that clean, soft hair is beautiful. Using shampoo without conditioner could result in healthy hair weakening, ending up brittle, and becoming more susceptible to damage. In fact, to maximize achieving healthy hair, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends using conditioner after every shampoo.

Is there a Con (Disadvantage) to Using Shampoo and Conditioner?

True, shampoo’s great for cleaning one’s scalp and hair. Also true, conditioner’s ideal for softening hair, and making it manageable. That said, both shampoos and conditioners usually have sulfates, which are a con—or a disadvantage—in healthy hair care.

What are Sulfates, and Why Are They a Disadvantage?

Sulfates are detergents, or surfactants, in all kinds of cleaning products, not just shampoo and conditioner. Over time, sulfates in shampoo and conditioner strip away the hair’s moisture, leaving it dry and unhealthy. Furthermore, sulfates often make the scalp feel dry and prone to irritation.

Natural Oils Pros & Cons: Helps with Healthy Hair, Doesn’t with Beauty

An additional way to achieve healthy hair is using natural oils.  Natural oils combat dandruff and dry scalp, plus nourish hair follicles. Excess dandruff detracts from hair’s natural beauty. Some natural oils work better for moisturizing, while others strengthen hair, and stimulate growth.

Which Natural Oils Are Best for Healthy Hair?

Coconut oil is a natural oil that deeply penetrates hair shafts, serving to moisturize and create healthy hair. Another penetrating natural oil is rosemary oil; as a bonus, rosemary oil stimulates hair growth. Jojoba oil contains vitamins A, C, and E, resulting in this natural oil helping to strengthen hair.

Disadvantages (Cons) to Using Natural Oils

While moisturizing, stimulation, and strengthening are advantages of natural oils, they do have disadvantages. Among the few disadvantages of using natural oils in hair is they attract pollutants and dust. Overusing natural oils can also cause hair to look greasy and weigh hair down. This tends to take away hair’s aesthetic beauty.
